How to Care For Your BioThane Gear

Caring for Your BioThane:

One of the greatest advantages of BioThane is the minimal maintenance needed to keep it looking great! Its vibrant colors endure year after year, and the PVC coating effectively repels mold, moisture, and bacteria, keeping it cleaner than any other leash options. We rarely have the need to perform a thorough clean of our BioThane gear; usually we just hang it up. It dries quickly, maintains its soft texture, and avoids becoming crusty or odorous like our previous leashes. However, there are occasions when a long line may collect something unpleasant or sticky, or when our gear starts to lose its luster after extensive use. If you need to clean your BioThane gear, here are several easy methods to restore its appearance!

  • The fastest and easiest option is to gently wipe your line with a damp towel, a baby wipe, or a sanitizing wipe. This effectively removes everyday dirt and grime.
  • For a deeper clean, soak your gear in a bowl of warm soapy water for a few minutes. Then just wipe it down with a sponge and dry it with a towel. Dish soap works great for this!
  • If you encounter stubborn patches (such as tar or sap), apply a mild cleaner or rubbing alcohol directly onto the affected area. Allow it to sit for a moment, then wipe with a cloth, sponge, or a gentle abrasive like an old toothbrush. Avoid using heavy abrasives like steel wool.
  • After visiting the beach, be sure to rinse both your line and the clasp thoroughly with fresh water to prevent corrosion caused by saltwater exposure.
  • When sanitizing your gear, use a solution like Kennel Sol. Follow the dilution instructions and wipe down or spray your gear.

 Caring for Clasp Snaps:

If your clasp becomes sticky (which can occur with exposure to saltwater or dirt/grime over time), thoroughly wash it with mild soap, rinse, add a few drops of WD-40 inside the clasp, and move the mechanism several times to help the oil penetrate.

 Caring for Your Brass Hardware:

While solid brass is rustproof, it will naturally develop a patina over time, resulting in a duller or greenish appearance. To restore the brass's luster, create a paste by combining the juice of half a lemon with a teaspoon of baking soda. Apply the paste to the clasp, let it sit for up to 30 minutes, buff with a soft cloth, and then rinse with water. While various homemade brass cleaner recipes can be found online, this straightforward method is effective and easy to use.

 About the Hardware:

We are committed to providing top-quality products and pet gear. For added safety and strength, we use metal & brass Chicago screws in our designs. It's important to periodically inspect these screws over time. Additionally, we apply Loctite to the screws to prevent them from loosening. If you require assistance with caring for and maintaining your BioThane gear, please don't hesitate to reach out to us; we're here to assist you in any way possible! To ensure the safety and longevity of your gear, we recommend cleaning and inspecting the hardware (including screws, buckles, and trigger snaps) weekly, especially if it's regularly used. This proactive approach will help keep your pup safe and secure.
