FAQs
Our leashes, collars, and accessories are crafted from BioThane, a woven polyester webbing coated with soft PVC. It's durable, lightweight, waterproof, odor proof, antimicrobial, and easy to clean! This material is perfect for dog gear because it doesn't absorb water, dirt, mud, or odors — say goodbye to dirty and smelly rope, nylon webbing, leather leashes, and collars! BioThane is more supple, flexible, and offers a better grip than nylon, reducing the risk of leash burn. Plus, it's easier to care for and cheaper than leather. With a wide range of vibrant colors and widths available, we can offer limitless customization possibilities!
BioThane's strength is determined by the material's width and not its thickness profile (2mm vs 4mm). Here is a list of BioThane-tested break strengths for the widths we stock:
- 5/8 inch (625lbs)
- 3/4 inch (750lbs)
- 1 inch (1000lbs)
These numbers are impressive, but it is important to remember that your leash or collar will only be as strong as its weakest point. This is most commonly the hardware/snap or the connection points where two different pieces of material are joined together. For this reason, we stock the highest quality hardware we can find.
No! Similar to nylon webbing, rope, or leather, BioThane is NOT indestructible against chewing. A determined dog, including a playful puppy, could potentially damage or chew through the material. It's crucial for safety reasons that you never leave your dog unsupervised while wearing any leash or long line. If you need to secure your dog for any reason, opt for a line specifically designed for that purpose, such as a cable.
Cleaning BioThane is incredibly easy! Just rinse and wipe with a towel. For a deeper clean, soak in mild soapy water, gently scrub with a sponge or towel, rinse thoroughly, and towel dry. To sanitize, use a sanitizing wipe or spray and let air dry.
For those in daycare or training facilities with shared leash use, frequent cleaning is essential. Opt for a germicidal solution like Kennel Sol, diluted as per instructions. Then, spray, wipe, or immerse the leashes in the solution and allow them to air dry. Learn more about how to care for your BioThane here.
Ensuring your leash hardware remains durable and operational for years requires some basic care and maintenance. Exposure to saltwater and sand gradually wears down your hardware. After a beach trip, muddy hike, or any instance where your leash encounters saltwater, sand, mud, or grime, it's crucial to rinse your leashes thoroughly and then towel or air dry them.
Over time, dirt, grime, and salt can build up in the spring mechanism of a standard bolt snap, leading to a "sticky" clasp. To remedy this issue, start by soaking the hardware in soapy water and rinsing it well to remove any larger debris. Next, apply a few drops of WD-40 or another penetrating oil inside the clasp where the spring is located. Repeatedly open and close the clasp until it moves more smoothly.
Avoid storing wet gear, as it can lead to damage. Rinse and dry your equipment after each use and hang it up for storage.
Under typical conditions, BioThane remains free from stickiness or tackiness. However, exposure to certain chemicals like DEET can cause BioThane to become sticky or tacky.
BioThane maintains its flexibility and durability even in cold weather conditions.
Absolutely! BioThane undergoes thorough testing to guarantee its colorfastness, meaning the color won't bleed or transfer onto fabric or fur. However, it's worth noting that brass hardware may potentially tarnish your dog's fur.
